When Christ is Born

And now for something completely different…. some modern Polish Christmas Carols. I’ll do one each day through Sunday.

The first is a modern arrangement of a traditional carol (all the rest will be modern). The singer is Anna Maria Jopek, a pop-jazz vocalist.

The translation (of the meaning, not a singing translation) is mine. A bit hurried but you’ll get the idea. The original lyrics are beneath the video.

When Christ is Born

When Christ is born
and comes into the world
The dark night gives way
to radiant brightness
The angels rejoice
And sing under heaven
Gloria, gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo!

They tell the shepherds,
guarding their flocks,
On to Bethlehem
To go as fast they can
Because a savior was born,
The redeemer of the whole world.
Gloria, gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo!

“Oh divine spirits
Messengers of heaven,
Please tell us clearly
what we should do,
For we don’t understand,
We are barely alive in fear.”
Gloria, gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo!

“Go to Bethlehem
Where the child is born
Greeted in swadling,
Laid in a manger.
Pay reverance to him,
He will sweeten your lot.”
Gloria, gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo!

Gdy się Chrystus rodzi

Gdy się Chrystus rodzi
I na świat przychodzi,
Ciemna noc w jasności
Promienistych brodzi.
Aniołowie się radują,
Pod niebiosy wyśpiewują:
Gloria, gloria, gloria
In excelsis Deo!

Mówią do pasterzy,
Którzy trzód swych strzegli,
Aby do Betlejem
Czym prędzej pobiegli,
Bo się narodził Zbawiciel,
Wszego świata Odkupiciel.

O niebieskie duchy
I posłowie nieba,
Powiedzcież wyraźnie
Co nam czynić trzeba,
Bo my nic nie pojmujemy,
Ledwo od strachu żyjemy.

Idźcie do Betlejem,
Gdzie Dziecię zrodzone,
W pieluszki powite,
W żłobie położone.
Oddajcie Mu pokłon boski,
On osłodzi wasze troski.
