Not too terribly long ago I was talking with a French colleague and they mentioned ‘the revolution of 1848’.
“Huh?” I helpfully replied.
They went on to explain that it drives them crazy when people talk about ‘The French Revolution’ when there were actually four and they went on to list them.
“And the fifth?” I asked?
“It’s already started!”
The absolute foreign news blackout of continuing civil (and less civil) unrest in France continues to astound me. If demonstrations one tenth the tenacity and size of that were happening in the US the media would be buying them molotov cocktails. But the protestors in France are protesting against neoliberalism (even if they can’t quite articulate that) so the international agreement to not notice them goes on.
