The other day I was leaving home at around 10:30 in the morning. The temperature was 0 celsius. The building I live in has a kind of semi-enclosed courtyard and on one of the balconies I saw a neighbor that I assume is Ukrainian (anyone with any kind of Eastern accent in Poland is now automatically assumed to be Ukrainian). He was outside for a smoke (nothing unusual there) but I wasn’t prepared for how he was dressed. He was sitting casually in shorts, a thin t-shirt and sandals…. and seemed perfectly comfortable in the zero degree weather.
I have no idea if this would be considered normal in Ukraine (or wherever he’s from) but it’s pretty weird here. Many Polish people claim to love winter but it’s usually a very…. abstract affair – their idea of enjoying winter is usually staring out at the snow and admiring the frost covered trees early in the morning…. from the warmth of inside.
